biography

The Kantorei St. Nikolai was founded in 1957 as the choir of the Main Church St. Nikolai of Hamburg.

In addition to singing at Sunday services, the choir’s main activity is performing the oratorios from the early baroque epoch to the modern era in concerts.

The central importance is the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, his Passions, the Christmas Oratorio and several Cantatas, which will be performed every year, and also the big works of the classic and romantic era. The Kantorei St. Nikolai dedicates a great involvement to the music of the 20th century.

They performed, for example Frank Martin’s Requiem, In terra pax and Golgotha, Leoš Janácek’s Glagolithic Mass of, Lili Boulanger’s Psaume 130 »Du fond de l'abime« as well as a-cappella works of Distler, Pepping, Kodály und Poulenc.

The choir has done many concert tours throughout Germany, Israel and in many European countries.
