Friedemann Kupsa, violoncello

biography

Friedemann Kupsa studied at the Academy of Music in Vienna. Master classes with Daniel Schafran and chamber music with the LaSalle Quartet. He was a member of the Munich Radio Orchestra. Since 1986 he has been active in chamber-music as cellist in the Fanny Mendelssohn Quartet. With this quartet he has achieved international recognition with numerous recordings on CD of chamber-music by women composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn, Ethel Smyth, Germaine Tailleferre and Grazyna Bacewicz, to name a few.

His identification with the chamber music of Reger and the string quartets of Milhaud and Bliss demonstrate his commitment to twentieth-century music. Together with the violinist Renate Eggebrecht he recently released the world premiere recording of the sonatas for violin and cello by the Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas and the Romanian composer Anatol Vieru.
