Renate Eggebrecht, violin

biography

The violinist received her first music lessons from her mother before she was four years old. At the age of 8 she became a student of Hans Hilf, who himself had studied at the Leipzig Conservatory in the master class of Prof. Davisson. The twelve-year-old Renate Eggebrecht entered the Lübeck College of Music and studied violin under Hans Hilf and piano under Wilhelm Rau. After further lessons under the violinist Friedrich Wührer she continued her studies at the Munich College of Music, and then with private studies.

The violinist attended master classes given by Max Rostal and Semyon Snitkovsky and chamber music courses with the La Salle Quartet. In 1986 the young musician founded the Fanny Mendelssohn Quartet, and together they performed in a series of concerts and played for numerous recordings. These include many first performances of hitherto unknown music, including the chamber music of Fanny Mendelssohn (in an edition made from the autograph score by Renate Eggebrecht) and works by Ethel Smyth, Grazyna Bacewicz, and Germaine Tailleferre.

In 1986 Renate Eggebrecht founded the Fanny Mendelssohn Quartet, with which she first performed the String Quartet (1834) by Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel in Munich and on 6 March 1988 she gave with her ensemble the World Premiere Performance of the Piano Quartet in A flat major (1822) of Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel at the cultural center Gasteig in Munich.

A recording of the first eight string quartets by Darius Milhaud was internationally acclaimed as “a great and valuable series” and the violinist was praised by the Musical Times for the “fine musical intelligence and warm tonal clarity."

Previous CD recordings of Max Reger’s chamber music, including the two great Violin Sonatas op. 72 and op. 139, the Piano Quintet op. 64 and the Piano Trio op. 102, and the two Piano Quartets op. 113 and op. 133 were internationally hailed as “highly emotional and captivating” readings of “fascinating virtuosity and bold imagination.” (Fono Forum)

The violinist has proved her command of twentieth-century music of the early modern era with her recordings of the complete works for violin solo by Max Reger.

She recently made the world premiere recordings of the Duo Sonatas by Nikos Skalkottas and Anatol Vieru.
She once again confirms her deep commitment to the music of this period with the edition VIOLIN SOLO Vol. 1 and 2 including world premiere recordings of sonatas by Johanna Senfter, Darius Milhaud and Dimitri Nicolau, together with the sonatas by Nikos Skalkottas, Arthur Honegger, Grazyna Bacewicz, Erwin Schulhoff, and Béla Bartók.
