Philharmonisches Kammerorchester Brasov

The Brasov Philharmonic Orchestra has been in existence for one hundred and twenty-six years and with over ninety musicians is something akin to the grandiosity of the Boston Symphony. Ovidiu Dan Chirila (contrabassist and pianist) has been the Philharmonic's director since 1996 but started his career in music back in 1984 when he worked as a conductor in Brasov's opera house after graduating at the University Of Bucuresti where he studied composition and conducting.

It was in 1991 that he left for Vienna further enhancing his musical credentials by working along side the likes of Claudio Bago between 1992 and 1994 before returning to Brasov to fulfil his current duties with the city's Philharmonic.

When examining the orchestra's make-up, the one thing which is striking is the multitude of stringed instruments. Six contrabassists, seven cellists and nine violists provide a wonderfully rich bottom end sound exactly how an orchestra should be. This may be something to do with the fact that Chirila is in fact a contrabassist. Consequently any soloists, whether they be flautists or pianists, can be perfectly appreciated above the layered texture of that deep string section.

Incidentally, the orchestra doesn't practice and perform in the same location. Ovidiu Chirila concedes that it is a serious disadvantage rehearsing in a ballet studio and then performing at the expansive hall at Brasov's Military Circle. Acoustically speaking, the two locations are like chalk and cheese. Even after over a century of performing, it is something of an unfortunate irony that the orchestra still does not have a venue to practice and perform. It's an issue Ovidiu Chirila has tried to stress time and time again, but sadly to no avail.

The orchestra has strong links abroad, most notably with the Köln Philharmonic as Chirila spends several months a year in the city. As a member of the German Union of Composers, his compositions are performed by the Philharmonic Orchestra in Köln.

Members of the Brasov Philharmonic are performing outside Romania every year, and this year is no exception. With a tour of Italy scheduled for this summer, it is expected to be another vibrant twelve months. ...
