Stefan Mickisch, piano

biography

Stefan Mickisch is among the most prominent of German pianists.

He studied in Hannover under Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, and in Vienna under Leonid Brumberg, as well as completing master courses given by Oleg Maisenberg, Bruno Leonardo Gelber and Sergiu Celibidache. The pianist, who was also awarded a scholarship by the "Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes", was ten times first prize winner in the "Jugend musiziert" competition - twice on a national level. He went on to win prizes at international competitions in Milan, Athens, Madrid and Montevideo.

His extensive career as a concert pianist has taken him to most European countries as well as to Canada, the USA, Central and South America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Stefan Mickisch has also acquired an excellent reputation as an accompanist having collaborated with famous singers such as Robert Holl, Kurt Moll and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

This versatile artist has cultivated the entire piano repertoire ranging from Bach to contemporary music. His paraphrases and transcriptions of Wagner's music dramas, highly sophisticated in their piano writing and fascinating in their intensity and colour, have made him internationally renowned. These transcriptions have yet to be equalled on an international level.

Today Stefan Mickisch lives near Bayreuth where, since 1998, he has given the introductory piano lectures to all of the Bayreuth Festival performances.

Invitations to perform at first class venues are being offered to him and these are not only confined to performances of Wagner's music. They include concerts and lectures at the Vienna State Opera, the Baden-Baden Festival, the Richard-Strauss-Tage in Garmisch and the Beethoven Festival in Bonn. In addition to this, Gidon Kremer has invited the pianist to give four "Ring" concerts at his select music festival in Lockenhaus.
