biography

After being a member of the Bavarian State Opera for several years, the young baritone has been a member of  the Vienna State Opera as of 2012 and sings there also all main roles of his Fach like Papageno/”Die Zauberflöte”, Guglielmo/”Cosí fan tutte”, Figaro/” Il Barbiere di Siviglia.

At the beginning of the season 2013/14 he started with an evening at the Theater an der Wien with “Der Kaiser von Atlantis”/Kaiser Overall and various Mahler-Lieder, followed by his debut at New York Carnegie Hall with “Apollo e Dafne”/Apollo. Further engagements include Pelléas/”Pelléas et Mélisande” with the Niederösterreichische Tonkünstler (Jun Märkl) in Vienna Musikverein, a new production of “La finta giardiniera”/Nardo (Emanuelle Haim) at the Opera Houses in Lille and Dijon as well as various concerts like with the Hamburger Symphoniker (Jeffrey Tate). Future engagements include his return to the Bavarian State Opera with “Die schweigsame Frau”/Barbier, “Il Turco in Italia”/Prosdocimo, “La Calisto”/Mercurio as well as his return to the opera companies of London Covent Garden (“Ariadne auf Naxos”/Harlekin) and Hamburg (“Il Barbiere di Siviglia”/Figaro), his debut at Staatsoper Berlin with a new production of “Emma and Eginhard”/Eginhard (René Jacobs) as well as an “Artist’s portrait” at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where the artist will be heard in numerous concerts, recitals and gala-performances. Further roles include Onegin and Billy Budd.

Highlights of the past seasons, were e.g. his debut at Glyndebourne Festival with “Don Pasquale”/Malatesta, his huge success in the new production of “Die Königskinder”/Spielmann at the Oper Frankfurt under the baton of Sebastian Weigle, his return to the Theater an der Wien in a new production of “Béatrice et Bénédict”/Claudio (Kasper Holten; Leo Hussain as well as various concert like with the Munich Bachchor (“St Matthew Passion”)

In 2011/12 the artist opened the Schubertiade in Vilabertran with “Die Winterreise” – a festival, where he has regularly been performing with various Liederabende. He gave highly acclaimed debuts, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Figaro, at Palau de les Arts in Valencia as Harlekin as Guglielmo at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden under the baton of Sir Colin Davis and finally at Opéra Comique Paris as Aeneas/”Dido and Aeneas” (William Christie; Deborah Warner). Further highlights of former seasons were his return to the Festspiele in Baden-Baden as Harlekin (Christian Thieleman), where he performed as Albert/”Werther” before, his appearance in a semi-stage production of “La petite messe solennelle” at the Festspiele Weimar, in Berlin, Dijon as well as in Paris. Several concerts led the artist with the Saarländischer Rundfunk to the Alte Oper Frankfurt and as Orfeo/”Orfeo” with Thomas Hengelbrock to Freiburg, Würzburg, Paris and Essen.

Nikolay Borchev is a sought-after concert-singer and has been given concerts with the Bayerischer Rundfunk Munich (“Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln“) the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Museumsorchester Frankfurt (“Carmina Burana”, “Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln”), the NPS Amsterdam (“Orlando Paladino”/Pasquale), the London Mozart Players, the Munich Kammerorchester, the Sinfonieorchester des Saarländischen Rundfunks (Saint-Saëns: “Oratorio de Noël”), the RSO and DSO Berlin, the Philharmonic State Orchestra Halle (G.F.Händel’s “Apollo e Dafne”/Apollo).

The artist also has a wide repertoire of song-recital-programs which includes the song cycles of Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mahler and Wolf as well as songs of Schostakowitsch, Tschaikowsky and Grieg. He has been invited for recitals, a.o. to Konzerthaus Dortmund, the Festspiele in Weimar and Mecklenburg Vorpommern, to the Brühler Schlosskonzerte, to Gran Canaria and to Vilabertran within the Schubertiade.
