Anatol Vieru died on 15 October 1998 in Bucharest.

His extensive Oeuvre includes all the musical genres: operas, orchestral works (also with solo instruments), choir and orchestra works, a cappella choir, works for multimedia and chamber music.

"Anatol Vieru is held in great esteem not only in Romania, but throughout the world. His multi-faceted and rich compositional oeuvre stands out because of its originality, high quality, innovations and tonal fantasy ...
As a representative of modalism, a novel modal technique that profits from experience with serial music, Vieru knows how to masterfully employ subtle mathematical processes in composing ...
Vieru is without a doubt a musical revolutionary. However, he refuses to be called an avant-gardist. This label carries within itself the danger of paralysis, and it is exactly that which runs decidedly counter to Vieru’s temperament. He has no intention of remaining behind, does not want to repeat himself, but rather to continually change and regenerate ...

Today we honor in Anatol Vieru a person who carries forward the great Eastern European tradition that has time and again understood how to influence the world’s musical culture in a decisive manner."
Gottfried von Herder Prize, Vienna 1986
