Horia Andreescu, Conductor

biography

Horia Andreescu is Music Director of the "Romanian National Broadcasting Orchestras" and also conductor of the "George Enescu" Philharmonic Orchestra, and he is founder and conductor of the Chamber Orchestra "The Virtuosi of Bucharest".

Horia Andreescu was born in 1946 in Brasov, Romania. He studied at the Bucharest Music Academy from 1965–1974 and continued his studies with Hans Swarowski and Karl Österreicher at the Vienna Music Academy 1974–1975. He won numerous prizes at major international competitions such as Nicolai Malko (Copenhagen, 1977) and Ernest Ansermet (Geneva, 1978), and he was awarded "Critics Prize" at the Berlin Biennale of Music (1981) and the prize "Conductor of the Year 1997" of the Romanian Critics Union.

During the 80s and 90s Horia Andreescu has worked as permanent guest conductor with three leading German orchestras: Radio Orchestra Berlin (RSB), Dresden Philharmonic and Staatskapelle Schwerin.

He is frequently invited to conduct major orchestras such as Staatskapelle Berlin, Berlin Symphony (now Konzerthaus Orchestra), Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Bochum Symphony, WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, Stuttgart Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Schwerin, Vienna Symphony, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Budapest Philharmonic, London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, Vienna Radio Symphony, Filarmonica di Torino, Dutch Radio Philharmonic, Dutch Radio Symphony and Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony, RTVE Orchestra Madrid, National Orchestra of Catalonia and the Orchestra dell'Arena di Verona.

For the leading European radio companies, Horia Andreescu has made more than 900 productions. In addition, he has recorded around 60 LPs and CDs. Horia Andreescu has recorded as a world premiere 8 CDs with all symphonic works by George Enescu. The cycle received greatest critical acclaim.

Opera productions have seen Horia Andreescu in Germany, Greece, Italy and Romania. Further, he has conducted orchestra tours in Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, France, Greece, Great Britain, Israel, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Yugoslavia, the Netherlands, Austria , Russia, Switzerland, Spain, the Czech Republic and Hungary.
