biography
Born in 1937 in Romania, he started to study violin at the age of four - at the begining eith his father who was an amateur- musician. In 1949 he begins to attend the School of Music in Bucharest and in 1954 he has his first important concert as a soloist, playing Wieniawsky - Concerto no 1 for Violin and Orchestra with the National Radio Orchestra in Bucharest. After his debut, he starts his violonist carreer playing with all philharmonic orchestras in his country and also with many orchestras abroad: Russia, China, France, Mongolia, Spain and so on so forth. In the same period of time he wins The George Enescu Competition and in 1961 he wins also The "George Enescu" Schoolarship. After graduating the Academy of Music in Bucharest he continues his carreer as a soloist, becoming also a member of the "G. Enescu" Philharmony in Bucharest.
Conducting was his passion since childhood, studying it from the age of ten, with famous Romanian conductors: Mircea Basarab, Emanoil Elenescu and the great Sergiu Celibidache. In 1963 he conducts his first concert and from that moment, starts his conducting carreer, and for some years this goes in parallel with his violonistical carreer. In 1965 he leaves for Paris where he studies with the famous conductors Pierre Dervaux and Charles Munch.
In 1968 he gets his diplomma at Ecole Normale du Musique de Paris in the unanimity of the jury ( First Prize ).
In 1970 he attends the conducting courses of the great conductors Leopold Stokowsky in New York and Eugene Ormandy in Philadelphia ( "Curtis "Institute ).
Came back in Romania, he becomes the First conductor of Brasov Philharmonic Orchestra and also conducting all orchestras from his country. From that moment he conducted and was permanently invited to conduct many orchestras in the whole world: American Symphony Orchestra, The Festival of Miami Orchestra, New York Symphony Orchestra, Queens Symphony Orchestra New York ( USA ), Suisse Romande Geneva Orchestra, Basel Symphony Orchestra, Winterthur Symphony Orchestra ( CH ), St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra ( Russia ), Havana Symphony Orchestra, Gotebors Symphony Orchestra, Upsala Symphony Orchestra, Gavle Symphony Orchestra ( Sweden ), Athens and Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra ( Greece ), Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, Adana, Istambul Symphony Orchestras ( Turkey ), Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Tokio Philarmonia, Osaka Chamber Orchestra ( Japan ), Manila, Singapore, Pekin, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra ( China ), Salzburg Festival Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurt, Giessen, Halle Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Kammer Orchester ( Germany ), Vilnius Philharmonic Orchestra ( Lithuania ), Krakovia Symphony Orchestra, Janacek Symphony Orchestra ( Cech Republic ), and many others orchestras from Italy, Spain, Denmark, France, Poland, Belgium ...
He was artistic director of Istambul Symphony Orchestra, Brasov Philharmonic Orchestra, Uppsala Philharmonic Orchestra. Now he is conductor of Ploiesti Philharmonic Orchestra.
From 2006 he was invited to conduct most of the Bucharest PROMS Galas. He played with great soloists among which: Radu Lupu, Lazar Berman, Li Min Cian, Daniil Shafran, E. Zukermann, Fazil Say, Valentin Gheorghiu, Dan Grigore, Dmitri Bashkirov, Ruggiero Ricci, Viktor Tretiakov, Igor Oistrach, Valery Oistrach, Ayla Erduran, Rudolf Kerrer, Magda Tagliaferro, Gita Carasic, Sabine Mayer, Graff, Viktor Pikaisen, Ion Voicu, Stefan Ruha, Collin Carr, Luis Bacalov, Hector Ulisses Passarella, Radu Aldulescu, Marin Cazacu, Vladimir Orlov, Lola Bobescu, ecc.
In different periods of his life, I.Ionescu-Galati gave masterclass lessons at Kent State University, Michigan State University ( USA), Thessoloniki Conservatory Greece, Anadolu University Turkey - violin, chamber music, orchestra, conducting classes.
He made many recordings and CD-s with Philips, Sipario Dischi, Electrecord, Olympia Explorer Recording UK, Radio Madrid, Radio Istambul, Casa Radio, Editura Muzicala, Radio Stockolm.
He is Citizen of Honour in different romanian cities: Brasov, Ploiesti, Tg Mures, Member of Honour of "Suzuky Academy" Japan. In 1992 he received The Honour Diplomma from the Ministery of Culture in Turkey.
In 2002 he gets the Great Prize of the Romanian Musical Critics and in 2004 he is awarded with "Ordinul Meritul Muzical" - "Mare Ofiter".
In 2007, during the anniversary concerts in Bucharest ( National Radio Orchestra, Bucharest Philharmonic G. Enescu Orchestra ), Ploiesti, Iasi, Tg Mures, Galati, Brasov, Bacau he was awarded with "Excelency Diplomma " by Ploiesti Mayor, Brasov Mayor, Tg Mures Mayor, Galati Mayor, Ploiesti Philharmonic, Galati Musical Theater, "Astra" Magazine, Forumul Muzical Roman.
